There’s 10 seconds left in the race. Coach Phillip Laliberte is shouting like crazy, encouraging a last second sprint. The runner’s are about to pass out from exhaustion. As the finish line approaches, both senior Jason Lelend, and sophomore Harrison Kenum are behind a runner from Berkley, but they make a lass second pass on the runner from Berkley.
Beth Sinclair prepares for her cross country meet, stretching and tying her shoes. She has butterflies in her stomach as she steps up to the starting line. Also on her mind is her sick mother in the hospital who could not be at her race. Sinclair doesn’t expect much from herself as she begins running the difficult course. She comes to a large hill, and the thought of her mother motivates her to run faster and she begins to pass the other runners. She continues to run faster and faster, and as the others fall behind, Sinclair finishes the race, qualifying for state finals.
